Introduction by Peter Donohue, Glanbia Meats, Project Promoter.

In recent years, due to the rapid introduction of new technology, changing work practices, and an ever-increasing focus on competitiveness within the sector, companies have become more positive in their outlook to the benefits of providing relevant training interventions, and have sought ways and means of upskilling the workforces. This is regarded as vital to allow the sector continue to produce high quality, innovative products, thus ensuring competitiveness remains top of the agenda.

The South Leinster and Munster Food & Beverage Skillnet has become part of the means by which the sector can achieve this strategy of continuing competitiveness. The success of the project in providing a range of quality training initiatives, from technical modules such as Programmable Logic Controls (PLCs), hydraulics, electronics through to English language training for foreign nationals, and on to the softer/personal skills of teamworking and training and coaching skills, over a period of 194 days of training, is unequivocal.

Who are SLM SKILLNET ?

Almost 1500 craftspeople, operators and front-line supervisors benefited from this training, and the benefits to the companies of these newly acquired or further developed skills in action in the workplace, have been enormous.

The project also provides us, as company representatives, and the participants on the various training modules, with many opportunities for networking with our peers, and these events prove invaluable in terms of sharing experiences and acquiring useful and relevant industry information.

We hope now that many more companies will take this opportunity of joining the network and availing of the benefits they will undoubtedly receive by participating. We also look forward to networking with new companies joining the network and sharing our experiences with them. They will join us in the unique position of taking control of the total planning for training, including the integration of identifying, designing, delivering and evaluating their own industry’s key skill requirements.
